Uzès
In 1229, Languedoc, of which Uzès was a part, became part of the French crown. In 1565, Charles IX raised the Count of Crussol to the rank of Duke in order to ensure his loyalty to the crown. In 1632, the Duke of Uzès became 1st Duke of France. The Duchy, located in the heart of the town, still belongs to the ducal family, who have lived there for over 1000 years.
In the 20th century, Uzès was given a new lease of life when its town centre was listed as a "protected area" on 5 January 1965. Since then, Uzès has continued to embellish itself: the streets have been paved, the electricity wires have been hidden, and 12 hectares of the town were restored in 1965. Today, 41 hectares of the town are listed under the terms of the Malraux law. Since the early 1950s, economic development has picked up thanks to tourism, but also to the installation of major establishments such as the departmental psychiatric hospital and the new local hospital, the Haribo company, the National Stud and numerous SMEs.
